Narukawa Art Museum: Hakone’s Hidden Gem

Hiding in plain sight near the shores of Lake Ashi is arguably one of Japan’s most rewarding, but least well-known art museums. The Narukawa Art Museum in Moto Hakone is home to Japan’s largest collection of “Nihonga” (“Pictures of Japan”), with over 4,000 paintings, exhibited on rotation with the change of seasons.

This mesmerising indigenous genre of contemporary art is produced on either washi paper or silk and uses paint made from natural ingredients including minerals, shells, corals, and even semi-precious stones, gold and silver. Through its stunning beauty, elegant complexity, and attention to detail, it embodies much of what we love and admire about Japanese art and the culture as a whole.

The Museum itself offers more than art; it's a blend of cultural learning and natural beauty. From the museum's design to its strategic location overlooking the lake, every aspect enriches your understanding of Nihonga and its context in contemporary Japan.

Trade Exclusive Tour

While guests can easily access and enjoy the museum themselves, a private tour from the very friendly and unassuming General Manager, Kanagawa-san, will take the experience to another level. Having worked at the museum for over 20 years, he has met with many of the artists and can offer personal stories and unique insights into their work.

Enjoy the museum in the quiet of the morning before it opens to the public or during museum hours. This private tour includes a complimentary drink in the café lounge, boasting stunning views of Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji.

This experience is a part of the Kanagawa Premium Collection - exclusive to the travel trade. To begin product planning, access the Kanagawa Product library and/or contact Japan-san.
